22 May 2007A few people emailed me asking how they could combine several PDF files into one.
Well not only I have shown them how but I have also decided to share it with you and provide you with a little script that I created for this purpose.
How would you combine a set of PDF files into one big PDF? It is very simple. For this you can use an application called Automator. Automator is located in your Applications folder and serves the purpose of automating tasks on Mac OS X.
Using Automator there are multiple ways you can automate combining PDF files. But if you are lazy then here is one way you could do it. Click on the following icon to download the ready-to-use script to combine your PDFs.
Instructions:
– Once downloaded and uncompressed (Safari should uncompress it automatically after download) you can drag and drop it to your Applications folder.
– When you double click on this script, a window will pop up asking you to locate and select the PDF files that you want to combine. You can select multiple files.
– Then click on Choose. The script will start combining your files and when it is done it will prompt you to choose where you want the save the combined PDF file.
Please keep in mind that while the script is running its status is indicated on your top menu bar. You can stop it at any time by clicking on the red stop button on the your menu bar as described in the following picture:

Now for those of you who would like to enhance or modify the script to their convenience before using it, I am going to show you the automator workflow that you need to create and also provide you with the workflow file at the end of this article. The following two screenshots describe which actions you need to use and the order in which you need to set up your workflow.

Click on the following icon to download the automator workflow file.
I hope this helps. Feel free to email me should you have any questions or comments.
The outside of the box said "Windows base machine or better", so I bought a Mac.

Ariel,
Automator is an application that only comes on Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.x). Depending on how the script was compiled, there is a chance that it will not run properly on Mac OS X 10.3.
Your best bet would be to upgrade to Tiger or to wait until Leopard (10.5) comes out soon…

You are The Man! Thanks for that great tip!
Is there any way to make something like an index that can be shown at the table of contents? Lets say you have a pdf for man cloth and another for woman cloth and want to combine them but at the same time give to people the option to choose between them like on a catalogue…
Thanks again!

with “the option to choose between them” I wanted to say: to go directly to each of them separately… something like a bookmark and link this bookmark to a specific page of the final combined PDF.
Thanks again!
