How To Locate Files Using Spotlight

Spotlight is a state of the art desktop search engine. I use it all the time to lookup files that I want to open. But many times I just want to locate a file without opening it.

Spotlight can help you find the location of a file without having to open it. Instead of trying to locate your file manually through the finder, there is a simpler and faster way to do it.

  • Press COMMAND KEY + SPACE BAR or click on the spotlight icon on the top right corner of your screen to open the search field
  • Type any keyword relevant to the file you are looking for
  • When you identify the file you want to locate from the spotlight results just hold the COMMAND KEY and then click on the file. This will close Spotlight and open the Finder window where your file is.
  • If you want to open a Finder window with the file selected, just press COMMAND-R and click on the file on the spotlight window.
