iPhone or iPod touch: Error message when connecting device to iTunes on Windows computer

When connecting an iPhone or iPod touch to your Windows computer, iTunes may display the following message: “An iPhone has been detected but it could not be identified properly.  Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone.”
