Meanwhile, over at the hallowed halls of the U.S. Patent Office, things were afoot that could cause even more problems for not only Apple, but most of the personal computing world.

They’ve joined up with ngmoco and their Plus+ system for all of their games , including Flick Bowling , Flick Fishing , and Moto Thunder . The first Freeverse game to use the system (which allows players to earn points across games, track friends’ playing habits, and vie for the tops of leaderboards) will be an upcoming title called Warpgate , and then it’ll be ported back to the already-released games as well

AdAge is reporting on the aftermath of Microsoft COO Kevin Turner gloating about getting a call from Apple’s lawyers asking them to stop running the ‘Laptop Hunters’ Mom/Lauren ad because it inaccurately represented Apple’s pricing. Guess what: Microsoft has since run an altered version of the ad. In the original, Lauren (not that Lauren ) is after a laptop with “…speed, portability and battery life for under $1,700.” Here you go, Lauren . While shopping, she says, “This Mac is $2,000, and that’s before adding anything.” In the current version, she simply says “It seems like you’re paying a lot for the brand,” but mentions no actual price.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , OS , Software , Odds and ends , Developer Sunday night on the Talkcast we were talking about sync apps for mobile devices — the latest iTunes update blocked the Palm Pre from identifying as an iPod in iTunes, and we were lamenting the fact that Pre users would have to go back to using Palm’s app again. Blackberry users are likewise forced to sync with one hand tied behind their backs: the Blackberry Desktop app up until now has only been available for Windows, and users on OS X have been recommended PocketMac for Blackberry , a third-party product. But now RIM has finally announced that they’re bringing the Blackberry Desktop app to the Mac — it’ll be available this September, and will offer all of the functionality you’d expect: syncing of calendars, contacts, and notes and tasks, app management, and the usual device updating and so on. There are screenshots on the official blog, and boy does that thing look like iTunes, all the way down to the sidebar menu, memory usage bar, and even the Music syncing screen

Several of you were quick to point out that, even with WPA encryption enabled, you are still vulnerable to different types of threats. Sadly, the very nature of what makes the Internet work also opens the door for several avenues of attack

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , Apple Corporate One of my favorite episodes of The Brady Bunch is ” Quarterback Sneak .” In it, Marcia starts dating Jerry Rogers, quarterback of the Fairview High School football team. Problem is, Fairview happens to be the rival of Marcia & Greg’s Westdale High School, and the two teams are scheduled to play in their annual big game on Saturday.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , Hardware , Odds and ends , Apple Financial , iPhone TG Daily (via Fortune ) is reporting that Japanese market research company BCN’s latest rankings of cellphone sales in Japan are showing that Apple’s smartphone is the the current market leader in that country. I did a quick check at BCN this afternoon while writing this post, and the iPhone 3GS 32GB is listed in first place in sales (see screenshot at right), with the iPhone 3GS 16GB in second place. The 3GS was just introduced in Japan on June 26th, and the sales figures are from the week of June 22 – 28. BCN’s source of data includes point-of-sale information from many of Japan’s largest electronics retailers, including Amazon Japan, Eiden, Bic Camera, K’s Denki, and Best Denki.
