Both Apple’s Online Store and AT&T’s website have gone offline in preparation for the iPhone 5 preorders in the next few hours. AT&T has posted a countdown to their site. MacRumors also has a countdown at the top of our front page .

There has been some consternation over the lack of backwards compatibility with the new Lightning dock connector in the iPhone 5. The Lightning to 30-pin adapter doesn’t pass any video and may not work with all audio docks . One MacRumors reader expressed particular concern over the lack of video support, noting that many in-car aftermarket entertainment systems use the video out function of the 30-pin connector to display and control apps from head units.

One of the iPhone 5 features highlighted by Phil Schiller during yesterday’s introduction was wideband audio, which offers “crisper word clarity and more natural sounding speech” according to Apple’s press release . Schiller noted that the feature requires carrier support and that it would be supported by over 20 carriers on the iPhone 5 at launch, but did not specify which carriers those would be. Phone Scoop reported late yesterday that Sprint has confirmed it will not support wideband audio (frequently marketed as “HD Voice”) on the iPhone 5, and PCMag.com has a good overview of why none of the three major U.S

While Apple has yet to officially announce tomorrow’s starting time for iPhone 5 pre-orders, it is beginning to look like the launch will follow the same pattern as last year with pre-orders starting at 12:01 AM Pacific Time / 3:01 AM Eastern Time. Apple sales representatives have been telling customers asking about availability that pre-orders will begin at that time, and both Verizon and Sprint have announced 12:01 AM Pacific launches for their own pre-orders.

AllThingsD ‘s Ina Fried caught up with Apple’s Phil Schiller after the introduction of the iPhone 5 this afternoon. She asked him about a number of new technologies that did — and didn’t — make it into the company’s new flagship phone. It’s not clear that NFC is the solution to any current problem, Schiller said.

Apple has seeded the Golden Master (GM) version of iOS 6 to developers today. The GM release represents the final version that will be shipped to customers

Today, Apple updated its iPod touch line to a 5th generation model which incorporates the same larger 4″ screen as the just announced iPhone 5. At only 6.1mm thin and 88 grams, the iPod touch is the lightest iPod touch they’ve created. The new iPod touch also contains the A5 processor. Apple is promising 40 hours of music playback, and 8 hours of video, slightly increased over the 4th generation Touch

At today’s media event, Apple announced that iOS 6 , which had announced in June at the company’s WWDC keynote event, will be available on September 19th. iOS 6 will offer several new features. Siri will be enhanced to provide movie information, sports scores, and the ability to post to Facebook and Twitter. The new Passbook app will hold tickets, passes, and payment cards for participating businesses. Safari will have a full-screen mode for better browsing and iCloud tabs to save your open tabs and offer immediate access to them on your other iOS devices and your computer.
